Subterranean Termite
Reticulitermes flavipes (eastern subterranean termite) and related Reticulitermes species
How to Identify
Look for pencil-thin mud tubes running from soil to wood, small piles of wings after a spring swarm, and wood that sounds hollow when tapped. Differentiate from ants: termite swarmers have straight antennae, equal-length wings, and a thick waist; ants have elbowed antennae and a pinched waist.
Signs of Infestation
Visible mud tubes on foundation piers or basement walls, swarms of winged termites in spring, piles of shed wings near windows or lights, unexplained wood damage (blisters in drywall, hollow-sounding beams), and doors or floors that begin to stick due to hidden wood loss.
Health Risks
Subterranean termites do not transmit diseases to people, but their presence can worsen indoor air quality and trigger allergy or asthma symptoms by increasing mold and dust in damaged structures. The primary risk is economic and safety-related from structural weakening.
Our Treatment Method
Licensed technicians begin with a full inspection to locate mud tubes, entry points and the feeding area. Treatment options commonly used in Asheville include monitored baiting systems placed in the soil to eliminate colonies over months, and soil-applied termiticide barriers installed around foundations and under porches to block foraging paths. Localized wood treatments and targeted removal/repair of damaged timbers are used where needed. Because colonies can be deep and interconnected, monitoring and follow-up visits over 6–12 months are typical to confirm colony elimination.
Prevention Tips
Keep wood and cellulose away from soil: store firewood off the ground and away from the house, remove tree stumps and construction debris, and maintain at least a 6–8 inch gap between exterior wood and soil. Correct drainage and grading so water runs away from foundations, repair leaking gutters and downspouts, ventilate and dehumidify crawl spaces, seal foundation cracks and gaps around utilities, and schedule an annual termite inspection—especially for older Craftsman homes, cabins with exposed timbers, and homes with crawlspaces.
