Norway Rat

Adult Norway rats are heavy-bodied, with coarse brown‑gray fur, a blunt muzzle and small ears. Body length is typically 7–10 inches (not including the tail), and the tail is shorter than head-plus-body. They are strong burrowers and prefer ground-level access (basements, crawlspaces, foundation gaps), unlike roof rats which are better climbers.

Fresh droppings and urine smell (ammonia-like), new gnaw marks on soft materials and wiring, collapsed attic or crawlspace insulation with shredded nesting material, active burrow entrances (5–10 cm diameter) near foundations, grease rub marks, daytime sightings (sign of heavy infestation), and pets showing interest in hidden spaces at night.

Professional control begins with a thorough inspection of the property edge-to-edge, mapping burrows, runways and points of entry common in Asheville homes (stone foundations, old plumbing chases in Craftsman bungalows, utility lines in condos, creekside cabins). Technicians combine exclusion (sealing holes, installing vent screens and chimney caps), targeted trapping (snap and live traps placed at runways and burrows) and, when necessary and safe, tamper‑resistant bait stations placed outdoors or in secured interior voids.
