American Cockroach

Adults are noticeably larger than German cockroaches, with reddish-brown coloration and a yellowish border behind the head. Nymphs are smaller, darker, and lack wings. Sightings are typically at night or when disturbed (floors, kitchens, basements, boiler rooms, crawl spaces). Look in warm, moist locations such as around drains, water heaters, and masonry voids.

Live or dead adults and nymphs, especially after lights are turned on; droppings (looks like black coffee grounds or pepper), smear marks along baseboards, visible ootheca fragments, persistent musty odor, increased sightings after rain or during warm spells, and grease buildup in hidden areas.

Professional control uses integrated methods: detailed inspection of harborage (sewers, crawlspaces, basements, commercial kitchens, voids), targeted gel baits and bait stations placed in protected locations, insect growth regulators (IGRs) to prevent nymph development, residual crack-and-crevice treatments in voids and wall voids, non-repellent residuals around entry points, and dusts (e.g., desiccants or boric acid) in dry voids. Treatment also includes sanitation and moisture control recommendations, drain/sewer evaluation and, when needed, follow-up monitoring with glue traps. For severe sewer-associated infestations, coordination with municipal sewer services may be required.

Reduce moisture: fix plumbing leaks, insulate cold-water pipes, and ventilate crawlspaces. Seal entry points: caulk foundation cracks, fit door sweeps and screen vents. Sanitation: store food in sealed containers, clean grease and spills promptly, empty indoor compost and pet food containers at night. Manage landscaping: keep firewood and mulch away from foundations and clear leaf litter. Cover drains when possible and maintain regular drain cleaning. Inspect firewood and packages before bringing them into cabins and historic homes.
