Mosquito

Family Culicidae (common local species: Culex spp., Aedes spp., Anopheles spp.)

How to Identify

Adults are slender, 3–7 mm long, with long legs and a single proboscis used for blood-feeding; Aedes species often have distinctive white markings on legs, Culex are duller brown. Larvae hang at the water surface and move with a characteristic wriggling motion. Eggs may appear as rafts (Culex) or single black eggs on container walls (Aedes).

Signs of Infestation

Multiple people reporting bites at dusk/dawn, mosquitoes swarming around outdoor seating areas, visible larvae in standing water, and an uptick in calls from neighbors about the same problem.

Health Risks

In Western North Carolina mosquitoes are primarily a nuisance but can transmit pathogens including West Nile virus and, less commonly, Eastern equine encephalitis or La Crosse encephalitis in rural and wooded pockets. Bites can trigger allergic reactions, severe itching that can lead to secondary skin infection, and sleep disruption. Pets and livestock can also suffer from mosquito-borne illnesses.

Our Treatment Method

Professionals begin with a thorough inspection to locate breeding sites (standing water, septic overflows, shaded containers) and resting pockets (thick vegetation, crawlspace edges). Common treatments include targeted larval control using Bti-based dunks or larvicides in non-drainable water, perimeter barrier sprays to vegetation and eaves where adults rest, and localized fogging for immediate adult knockdown before events. For persistent problems, technicians set up regular service visits during the season, install or recommend mosquito traps, treat storm drains and catch basins where permitted, and advise on long-term landscape and drainage changes. All applications are made with product and environmental safety in mind and timed to minimize risk to pollinators.

Prevention Tips

Eliminate standing water: empty plant saucers, clean gutters, change birdbath water weekly, and cap or treat rain barrels. Repair window and door screens and install tight-fitting lids on cisterns and septic vents where needed. Keep vegetation trimmed and create open, breezy outdoor spaces—mosquitoes avoid constant wind. Use Bti dunks in ponds and low-flow water features. For cabins and older homes, inspect crawlspaces and roof gutters for pooled water. For immediate personal protection use EPA-registered repellents and porch fans to disrupt host-seeking flight.

Habitat & Behavior

Shallow standing water in yards and woodlands (ditches, tire ruts, tree holes), container habitats (plant pots, buckets), clogged gutters, ornamental ponds with sluggish edges, and shady vegetation where adults rest by day. Mountain cabins with cisterns and older homes with poor drainage are frequent hotspots.

Local Prevalence

Mosquitoes are common across Asheville and the surrounding Western NC Mountains, especially near the French Broad River corridor, lower-elevation valleys, wooded lots, and properties with seasonal drainage depressions. Prevalence increases after heavy summer rains and during warm, humid evenings. {prevalence_note}
