German Cockroach

Blattella germanica (German cockroach)

How to Identify

Adults are slender, light brown to tan with two dark longitudinal stripes on the pronotum; nymphs are wingless, darker and smaller. Look for 8–16 mm long adults, oval egg cases about 6–8 mm, tiny black fecal pellets and live roaches scurrying from cracks when lights are turned on at night.

Signs of Infestation

Live roaches seen at night (or daytime sightings indicating heavy infestations), clusters of droppings and smear marks near food and water, egg cases tucked in cracks, shed skins, a persistent musty/oily odor and small scratches or damage to packaging and paper goods.

Health Risks

German cockroaches contaminate food and surfaces with bacteria and can carry pathogens (Salmonella, E. coli) on their bodies. Their shed skins and feces are potent indoor allergens that worsen asthma—especially in children. They also ruin packaged food and can damage paper and fabrics in heavy infestations.

Our Treatment Method

Professional treatment in Asheville relies on integrated pest management: a thorough inspection of kitchens, bathrooms, laundry areas, basements and shared plumbing chases; placement of targeted gel baits and bait stations in cracks and behind appliances; crack‑and‑crevice treatments and dusts for wall voids where appropriate; use of insect growth regulators (IGRs) to interrupt reproduction; removal of food/water sources and clutter; monitoring with glue traps and scheduled follow‑ups until populations are eliminated. In multi‑unit buildings, coordinated treatment across units is essential to prevent reinfestation.

Prevention Tips

Maintain rigorous sanitation: store food in sealed containers, clean crumbs and grease promptly, empty pet food bowls overnight. Fix plumbing leaks and reduce humidity in kitchens and bathrooms. Seal gaps around pipes, baseboards and utility penetrations; install door sweeps. Avoid storing cardboard and paper in warm, humid utility rooms. In apartments or condos, report sightings promptly so building management can coordinate treatment across units.

Habitat & Behavior

Warm, humid indoor microhabitats: behind refrigerators, stoves, dishwashers, inside wall voids, under sinks and around drains, laundry rooms, boiler rooms and in multi‑unit plumbing chases. In Asheville, older Craftsman bungalows and mountain cabins with multiple wall cavities and stone foundations provide ample harborage; downtown condos and apartments allow rapid spread via shared walls and plumbing.
