Flea
Ctenocephalides spp. (commonly: cat flea, Ctenocephalides felis)
How to Identify
Look for fast‑moving, jumping insects on pets or in carpet fibers; use a fine‑tooth comb over a white towel to capture adults or flea dirt from a pet. Flea dirt will dissolve and turn red when wet (it’s digested blood). Inspect under furniture, along baseboards, in pet beds, and in shaded yard areas near foundations or wood piles for eggs, larvae (small worm‑like, pale), and pupal cocoons.
Signs of Infestation
Pets scratching, biting or developing red hot spots; finding flea dirt or tiny black specks on pet fur; seeing adults jumping on pets or people; increased bites on household members; tiny white eggs in carpet or bedding; repeated bites despite over‑the‑counter products.
Health Risks
Fleas cause intense itching, allergic dermatitis in sensitized pets, and secondary bacterial skin infections from scratching. Heavy infestations can cause anemia in puppies and kittens. Fleas can transmit Dipylidium caninum (a tapeworm) to pets and, rarely, bacterial pathogens. Bites can be uncomfortable for people and disturb sleep; in multi‑family housing infestations often spread between units.
Our Treatment Method
Professionals use an integrated approach: thorough inspection to map infestation (indoors and yard), targeted indoor residual sprays for adults, insect growth regulators (IGRs) to stop egg and larval development, crack/crevice dusts in carpet edges and voids, carpet and upholstery treatment, and yard perimeter treatments focused on shaded, moist harborage (under decks, wood piles, shady mulch). Technicians coordinate pet treatments with veterinarians — recommending topical or oral flea products — and schedule follow‑up visits every 2–4 weeks until no new activity. Vacuuming and washing linens are combined with chemical controls to remove eggs and stimulate pupae to emerge where they can be exposed to treatment.
Prevention Tips
Keep pets on year‑round veterinary‑recommended flea prevention; wash pet bedding weekly in hot water; vacuum carpets, rugs and furniture frequently and discard vacuum bag contents or empty canister outdoors; reduce shaded, humid yard harborage (clear leaf litter, move woodpiles away from the house); seal gaps in foundations and around pipes to limit rodent/wildlife nests near structures; inspect and treat incoming second‑hand furniture; in multi‑unit buildings coordinate prevention with neighbors and building management.
